I agree that "Robert Moses and the Modern City: The Transformation of New York" is a handsomely crafted publication..I made it a point to make trips out to Betsy Head Playground/Pool in Brownsville & the beach at Jacob Riis Park after seeing the photos in the book. I'll have to go back and read Biondi's and Jackson's essays in that book..

Speaking of visiting Moses landmarks in the city, I've got an idea for a project..maybe something you, me and Sean could potentally collaborate on. We'll discuss next time you're in town..Sumanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07325730483122616853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5911464913331967955.post-19866231496349462032011-08-12T05:18:52.160-07:002011-08-12T05:18:52.160-07:00Ryan, I haven't read your whole piece yet, but...Ryan, I haven't read your whole piece yet, but thought I'd post some comments as I work my way through it:

Great point about how TPB is in some sense a great biography of 20th century New York City--the chapter about Al Smith, and his rise from Tammany to almost-POTUS, also struck me as brilliant. IIRC, Caro portrays both Moses & FDR as political protégés of Smith, but that turned on each other thru the '30s & '40s? Didn't quite absorb all of that..

I do like "Son of Sam", but if there's any movie that has come to epitomize the darkness and chaos of mid-'70s NYC, it's got to be "Taxi Driver", no? Also worth a mention is "The Bronx is Burning", don't you think?

More later..Sumanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07325730483122616853noreply@blogger.com
